African Trader offers a unique and carefully curated selection of handcrafted objects from Southern and East Africa, including Madagascar and Mauritius. The shop gives access to authentic and exceptional African decorative objects. African Trader supports local craftspeople, artists and communities, with an emphasis on sustaining traditional craft knowledge and skills.

African Trader is located in Mauritius and established by Kate and Forbes Mavros, designers for the family-run luxury jewellery brand, Patrick Mavros.

The couple has called Mauritius home since 2006. “African Trader’s aesthetic is a reflection of how we decorate both the Patrick Mavros Atelier and our home. Our aim has always been to inspire our customers through our well-appointed spaces. At African Trader, we are able to offer a platform where people can access these unique creations and take a piece of African heritage home with them.” – Forbes.

A unique style

African Trader was inspired by Forbes’ and Kate’s passion for sourcing beautifully made local craft goods. “African Trader grew out of our travels across the African continent, our enthusiasm for collecting intriguing, authentic and unique pieces of high craft, and our desire to preserve traditional ways of designing and making. African Trader is a way for us to share our appreciation of beautiful handmade art.”- Kate.
The African Trader shop is housed in a historic building next to the Patrick Mavros Atelier, in the heart of the Beau Plan Creative Park on the former Beau Plan sugar estate.

We have the largest selection of Live Edge Wood slabs in the Indian Ocean. African Trader live edge slabs are sourced from fallen timber on a forestry concession in central Mozambique. This concession is committed to developing concepts locally, with a strong focus on sustainability and responsible management. It is our pleasure to advise you on the best Live Edge Slab for your requirements or to assist with design and fabrication on a custom piece of furniture.

The shop is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 12.30pm;
